As the Republican primary heats up, the two top candidates – ex-Speaker Newt Gingrich and ex-Governor Mitt Romney have taken to challenging competitors to $10,000 bets (Romney to Perry), challenging the other to return $1.6 million in consulting fees (Romney to Gingrich) and urging the other to return money earned from making people unemployed (Gingrich to Romney).
So it is that I decided to present the net worth of the Republican presidential candidates. As we consider each one for the office of the President, a useful additional perspective is how much these men and woman are worth.
1. Mitt Romney ($190 million to $250 million)
Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, have a large fortune that is worth $190 million to $250 million. This is in the same range as his 2007 Presidential financial disclosure records, according to his campaign.
The sizable holdings reflect Romney’s success in heading a major Boston venture capital firm – Bain Capital – and his own very profitable investments on Wall Street.
An additional blind trust exists in the name of the Romneys’ children and grandchildren, valued at between $70 and $100 million as of 2007.
