Hiring Picture Brightens as Unemployment Claims Fall to 364,000

The employment picture continues to brighten

The U.S economy continues to show more employers hiring as the number of first-time filers for unemployment benefits fell again in the week ending December 17 to 364,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 368,000.

This number marks the lowest level of initial unemployment claims since May 31, 2008, and suggests that 2012 may be the year employers begin to hire in much greater numbers.

The 4-week moving average also fell  to 380,250, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 388,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8% for the week ending December 10, 0.1% lower than the previous week.

Continuing claims – which include people filing for the second week of benefits or more during the week ending November 26 was 3,546,000, an decrease of 79% from the preceding week’s revised level of 3,625,000.

The 4-week moving average was 3,631,750, an decrease of 40,000 from the preceding week’s revised average of 3,671,750.

With the Eurozone showing signs of stabilizing, there may be room for the economy to pick up steam in the coming months, barring political problems in DC – the major threat to the US economy.
