4. Joseph Biden (Between -$209,000 and +$734,000)
Joseph “Joe” Biden, Jr. is the 47th and current Vice President of the United States, selected by President Barack Obama.
He was a United States Senator from Delaware from January 3, 1973 until his resignation on January 15, 2009, following his election to the Vice Presidency.
Now is where I get to scratching my head. His estimated net worth is approximately $262,500, the midpoint between the low and high numbers he gave in his financial disclosure.
For a man who has been a U.S. Senator for 36 years, followed by the VP spot since 2009, this is a really low net worth. Some in their 30s have this net worth. Biden is 69 years old.
Prior to being elected to the Senate, practiced law with his own private firm and was an elected member of a county council for two years. His net worth is very low based on the type and duration of his employment.
One possibility is that he has been giving most of his money to charity, but records show he gave an average of $369 a year to charity from 1999 to 2008, when he made between $136,700 and $169,300 a year, in addition to his wife’s salary. She still works as teacher, by the way.
So no, charity did not soak up all his earnings, unless it was anonymous. What did? I know that’s his business, but go figure.
